What is Xeomin®?
In a similar vein as Botox, Xeomin® is an injectable neuromodulator used in the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, as well as some other expression lines around the face.
Using the same active ingredient as Botox and Dysport, Xeomin®’s is made from the bacteria which causes botulism. The botulinum toxin allows Xeomin® to temporarily paralyze certain nerve activity to the muscles within the treatment area, preventing facial muscles from making their normal contractions.
As these muscles no longer contract, the skin now has the time it needs to return to its normal, smooth, wrinkle-free shape and texture.
Benefits of Xeomin®
Often, patients who may not find Botox or Dysport as effective (commonly after repeated treatments), will opt for Xeomin®. It differs from its competitors (Botox & Dysport) as it is often called the “naked injectable”. This refers to Xeomin® not containing any additives, and purely made from the botulinum toxin.
The benefit of this added purity is that the body is less likely to resist the effects, and this can sometimes mean for much faster results. Many additives and binding agents tend to be rejected by the body and can often cause irritation, and even infection. Other major benefits are:
- Reduced forehead wrinkles.
- Reduced eyebrow wrinkles.
- Little to no downtime.
- Generally repeated every 4-6 months.
- Little to no pain.
- Sessions only require about 5-10 minutes, depending on size of the treatment area.
How does Xeomin® work?
Xeomin® injections are commonly done in smaller doses. Sessions are relatively quick, typically lasting only 15 minutes.
As we mentioned, Xeomin® is relatively fast acting in most patients and while some results may be visible immediately, they will progressively improve during the days that follow.
Side Effects?
Treatment with Xeomin®g is relatively safe, as long as it is administered by a trained professional. However, as with any facial injectable, patients can sometimes experience slight swelling and redness – but this will disappear within a few hours or days, in the most severe cases.
